This project can be approached one of two ways. It can about children, or it can be created as though through a child's eyes.
Creating art with children is a very gratifying experience, as is creating art about children. The focus of this art journal prompt is to create art about children, or to create art as though you are looking through a child’s eyes. You will be surprised how much you are going to have with this mixed-media art journal prompt!
For this mixed-media art journal prompt, you will need the following materials:
- Art journal
- Waxed paper
- Finger paint, numerous colors
- Stickers, fun cartoons and child images
- Crayons, numerous colors
- Colored pencils, numerous colors
- Glitter glue, numerous colors
- Feathers
- Markers, numerous colors
- Magazine cut-outs
- Heavy-duty glue stick
- White school glue
- White heavy-duty paper
- Scissors
Follow these simple instructions for completing this mixed-media art journal prompt:
- Open your art journal to the first blank page and place a piece of waxed paper beneath each page to protect the rest of the pages in your book.
- Take out the finger paint and get your hands dirty! Smear it all over both sides of the page spread. Use as many colors as possible, and create vibrant swirls.
- While the paint dries, fold the white paper into quarters and cut it up. Draw, scribble, doodle, and write all over each piece you have cut. Use crayons, colored pencils, and markers.
- Using the heavy-duty glue stick to affix the pieces of paper to the painted pages. This can be done in a random or straight pattern.
- Layer over magazine cut-outs and feathers on top of the white paper’s edges and on the rest of the page spread. The feathers will hold better with white school glue, but it will be extremely sticky and awkward to work with. So, if you are working with children, offer them some help with this step.
- Add glitter glue in swirls and as borders throughout the page spread. Create stars, patterns, and blobs of glittery color.
Encourage children to work on this art journal prompt as well. This is a great way to introduce children to the wonderful world of art journaling and art page alteration. Be sure to cover over the work area with newspaper or cardboard so the children can make a big mess without worrying.
Repeat this page spread until you have completely expressed your thoughts about children, or conveyed your idea of art through a child’s eyes. Be sure the page spread has dried completely before closing your art journal or else the pages will stick together. Speed drying time through use of a heat gun or hair dryer if desired.
