Create pages in your art journal focusing on the Easter holiday, what it means to you, and reflections of years past.

Focusing art journal pages on a specific holiday can be achieved in a variety of ways. How it is done is based primarily on the look attempted to be achieved, as well as the thought expression intended. Here is an art journal idea for Easter to explore:

Materials:

  • Art journal
  • Easter themed stickers, die-cuts, stencils, rubber stamps, and any other embellishments desired
  • Two pieces of waxed paper slightly larger than the pages in the art journal
  • Watercolor paint, variety of colors
  • Heavy-duty glue stick
  • Paintbrushes
  • Small containers of water
  • Ultra-fine black sharpie
  • Multi-colored glitter gel pens
  • Old book pages
  • Distress ink

Instructions:

  1. Open the art journal the next blank page spread. Place a piece of waxed paper beneath each page in the spread. Create a color wash on both sides of the page spread. Use one single color that starts out dark on the edges, and gradates to a lighter shade in the center of the page. Or, use a variety of colors so long as they still work from dark to light. Allow the page spread to dry completely before moving on to the next step. (Note: speed drying time through use of a heat gun or hair dryer.)
  2. While waiting for the page spread to dry, take out the old book pages. Tear them down to the size of a playing card (use one as a template if necessary), leaving the edges deckled. Rub the edges of the torn book pages with distress ink, and then set them aside to dry.
  3. Once everything had dried, add the distress book pages in random areas of the page spread using the glue stick.
  4. Layer on the Easter themed embellishments throughout the entire page spread.
  5. Add text (quotations, journal entries, song lyrics, memories of Easters in the past, letters to the Easter bunny, etc.) in all the areas left blank in the page spread using the ultra-fine black sharpie.
  6. Add doodles, dots, shapes, small drawings, and other designs throughout the page spread using the glitter gel pens.

Variations:

  • Use no-stick glitter glue sets, rather than the glitter gel pens, so there is more dimensions to the pages.
  • Create mini-envelopes from the old book pages, and then add journal entries or other flat paper pieces inside.
  • Find magazine cutout’s that are Easter themed, and collage them on to the page before adding the old book pages.
  • Make reproductions of old Easter photographs on to drawing paper, alter or embellish them with chalks or inks, and then use them throughout the art journal page spread.

Repeat this art journal as often as needed to completely work out your thoughts, memories, and feelings surrounding this holiday. Consider working on this art journal prompt with a friend, family member, or with a group in order to encourage the thought and inspirational process. These types of creative moments are a great way to introduce children and teens to art journal techniques, as well.
