Are You a Movie Buff? Turn Your Interests Into Mixed-Media Art!

© Jennifer Hollowell

Turning interests into art opportunities is a great way to stay inspired and keep artist's block as far away from you as possible. What are your favorite movies?

Are you a movie buff? Everyone has a favorite movie, or many favorite movies. These can range from movies that were in seen in theaters, through rentals, through purchases, and on TV. No matter how people arrived at their favorites, they are still a part of their lives. What are your favorite movies? That is the theme of this mixed media art journal prompt.

For this mixed media art journal prompt, you will need the following materials:

Follow these simple instructions to complete this mixed media art journal prompt:

  1. Open your art journal to the first page spread. Add color (solid, scribbles, doodles or however else you would like the color to be presented) to both sides of the page spread. How bold or how muted you work with this color coverage is completely up to you, as well as the color choices.
  2. Using the heavy-duty glue stick, add printed images depicting your favorite movie in either scrapbook or collage style. How these images are arranged is completely up to you – there are no right and no wrong decisions for this art journal prompt.
  3. With catalog, sales flyers, and movie themed embellishments, create either a uniform or collage style presentation on both sides of the page spread. Leave some areas for writing.
  4. Take out the black ultra-fine sharpie and journal about what you like about each of the favorite movies depicted on the page spread. Follow this by quotations and theme songs from each of the movies you have selected.
  5. Add additional doodles, texts, and drawings using color and the black ultra-fine sharpie.

As you can see, this is a very quick and easy art journal prompt. For those interested in introducing art journal techniques to children or those who have never tried this type of mixed media art project before, this might be a good starting prompt to wet their feet with. Because the theme is solely about a particular interest, novices will less likely feel intimidated and shy away from the project.

Repeat this art journal prompt as often as needed until all of your favorite movies have been presented. Take this project further by adding movie ticket stubs, ephemera from theaters, and painted areas of the page spread. For added dimension, add walnut distress ink to the edges of paper embellishments, ephemera, and themed papers before affixing them to the page spread.
