For those homeschooling, working on a distance learning program, or attending public school art journaling goals for the coming year puts a creative twist on academics.
No matter what type of educational system is being entered into – be it public school, private school, homeschool, or university – setting up a system of goals for the coming year is a positive idea. Consider putting a creative twist on academics by art journaling about back to school goals.
Materials:
Art journal
Waxed paper
Watercolor or acrylic paint
Paint or sponge brushes
Small containers of water
Back to school sales fliers
Construction paper
Scissors
Glue sticks
Ultra fine tipped black sharpie
Assignment book papers
Stapler
Staples
Paperclips
Instructions:
Open the art journal to the first blank page spread, and place a piece of waxed paper beneath each side.
Create a color wash using the watercolor or acrylic paint. This color was can be as muted or as vibrant as desired. You may also wish to leave some blank areas on the pages, as well. Allow the page spread to dry completely before moving on to the next step. Speed drying time through use of a hair dryer or heat gun.
While the page spread is drying, go through the back to school sales fliers and cut out (or tear out depending on the edge you are interested in) pictures, words, and phrases. Set these aside.
Tear up the construction paper (consider using a variety of colors) to use as bases for the pictures cut from the sales fliers, as well as for short journal entries.
Write out brief journal entries, as well as goals lists, on the assignment book papers and some pieces of the construction paper using the ultra fine black sharpie.
Begin collaging each element on to the page spread once it has dried completely using the glue stick. Be sure to bring adhesive right to the edges of each element prior to affixing them to the pages to prevent them from curling up and peeling.
On the blank or un-collaged areas of the page spread, write out additional journal entries and goals lists using the ultra fine black sharpie.
Further embellish the page spread by adding elements using the stapler, and the paper clips.
Variations:
Create miniature cards from the construction paper, and write out goals on the front and inside prior to affixing them to the page.
Use a variety of colors of distress ink to rub edges of each element before adding them to the pages.
Use brads and eyelets to affix elements to the page spread.
Type out goals on your computer using interesting fonts, and the print them out to use on the page spread.
Consider working on this project with a group of friends or family members as a way of bringing a bit of creative excitement to the upcoming school year. Another option to consider is creating an altered book or dedicated art journal specifically about goals, ambitions, plans, and dreams for the upcoming academic year.
