Dreams and aspirations help everyone formulate attainable goals. Get in touch with your dreams and goals through creating mixed media art.
This art journal prompt focuses on dreams and goals. We all have them, no matter how young or old we are. Some goals are attainable, while others seem very out of reach. However, when they are tangible and on paper, they seem more likely to achieve. So, let’s make some art!
For this art journal prompt, you will need the following materials:
- Your art journal
- Three or four of your favorite magazines
- Heavy-duty glue stick or gel medium
- Acrylic or watercolor paint
- Paint or sponge brushes
- Small containers of water
- Black fine tipped sharpie
- Scissors
- Small envelopes
- Small pieces of paper (that can fit into the envelopes without being folded)
Follow these simple steps to complete this mixed media art journal prompt:
- Flip through your favorite magazines and choose images, texts, and articles that exemplify who you are, what your interests are, and what your dreams are. This could be something as simple as a tea cup you like looking at or as complex as an article about how to set attainable goals.
- Open your art journal to the first blank page spread. Set up your work area so everything is spread out in front of you as much as possible. Create an inspiring work area so you can create without interruption, if possible.
- Create a color wash, using light or translucent dark colors. Allow the page spread to dry completely before moving on to the next step (speed the process with a heat gun or hair dryer). Remember, the more water used in the wash, the more rippled your pages will be.
- Add the magazine cutouts in collage format throughout both sides of the page spread. Layer over the envelopes to create an interesting juxtaposition of elements.
- Using the black sharpie, write out all your dreams onto the small pieces of paper. Place them into each envelope. Close the journal and dry it under a heavy stack of books.
- Once the page spread has dried completely, open your art journal to the pages you have just worked on. Using the black sharpie, write out inspirational quotations about dreams, goals, aspirations, motivation, and inspiration.
Repeat this art journal prompt on as many page spreads as needed to use up all your magazine cutouts and convey all of your dreams. Revisit these pages often and open the envelopes to see if your dreams are coming true. If they are, flip the paper over and write the date on the back. If they have not, think about what changes you could make in your life in order to make these dreams come true.
