Everyone has goals, in some form or another, and this includes mixed-media artists. What are your artistic goals?
Goals are an important part of many people’s lives; professional artists and novices alike. Mixed-media artists do not have to be shown in galleries or be active sellers in the marketplace to have goals set. These goals can range from learning a new technique to creating a piece (or working on a piece) on a daily basis.
That is the focus of this art journal prompt. The art journal will become the goal-making tool and, rather then focusing on a written list, these goals will be bits of art.
Materials:
Art journal
Glue stick
Scissors
Distress ink
Black fine-tipped sharpie
Magazine clippings
Ephemera
Post-it notes
Acrylic paint
Paintbrushes
Small containers of water
Instructions:
Open your art journal to the first blank page spread. Using colors of your choice, create a light color wash across the entire surface of both sides of the page spread. Allow these pages to dry completely before moving on to the next step. Remember, the more water used during this step, the more pages are going to ripple and curl.
Using the magazine clippings and ephemera, create a collage on both sides of the page spread. Cover as little or as much of the pages you desire. If you find the glue sticks are not providing the hold you are after, use gel or decoupage medium in its place.
Add post it notes with distress ink rubbed on the edges layered over the collage in a neat and structured, or a random manner. Allow the pages to dry completely.
Take out the black fine-tipped sharpie and write out what your goals are on each one. Reserve one post-it note per goal, or use each to create mini-lists all over the page spread.
Variations:
Omit the collage work and post-it notes. In their place, create lists in random places of the painted areas. Then, add doodles and drawings on the rest of the page. Finish off the page spread by distressing the edges with ink.
Find magazine clippings and ephemera that mirrors the goals you are making, and then create a "wordless” list of goals.
Once you are finished with this art journal prompt, determine if your goals have been explored enough. If further exploration is in order, either add more to the page spread or continue with additional page spreads until all the goals have been fleshed out completely. Work on this art journal prompt with a friend so the two of you can bounce ideas off each other and make sure nothing is forgotten.
