Art Journal Your Excitement

What Most Excites You? Create Art Project About The Feeling.

Apr 14, 2008 Jenn Greenleaf

Exploring feelings of excitement is very positive and invigorating. Let's turn these feelings into mixed-media art in art journals.

Excitement is a very positive feeling a lot of people love holding on to, and with good reason! Sharing these feelings bring a positive vibe to any room, particularly if those you are sharing it with feel this feeling of excitement. Let’s explore what you are most excited about in this mixed-media art journal prompt.

For this mixed media art journal prompt, you will need the following materials:

  • Art journal
  • Waxed paper
  • Bold acrylic paint
  • Paint or sponge brushes
  • Small containers of water
  • Stickers and embellishments depicting excitement or what you are excited about
  • Black ultra-fine sharpie
  • Heavy-duty glue stick
  • Collage materials depicting excitement or what you are excited about
  • Embellishments (scrapbook items, buttons, charms, etc.)

Follow these simple instructions to complete this mixed media art journal prompt:

  1. Open your art journal to the first blank page spread. Add a piece of waxed paper beneath each side of the page spread to protect the rest of the pages in your art journal.
  2. Create bold color washes over both sides of the page spread. These can be blobs, blots, or splatters of color. Create this addition of color so it is exciting for you to look at. Allow the paint to dry completely. Speed drying time through use of a heat gun or hair dryer.
  3. Layer on collage items, stickers, and embellishments. Continue this layering until you feel the pages are done. This can be as little or as much layering as you would like.
  4. Add more paint to the page spread in various areas, layering over items added in the previous step.
  5. Using the black ultra-fine sharpie, write directly over the painted areas and items affixed to the page. Explain what you are excited about and why this excites you.

Other options for this mixed media art journal prompt:

  • Use a white gel or paint pen to write over the items affixed to the page.
  • Attach brads and eyelets to the pages for added interest and movement.
  • Rub distress ink to the edges of the page spread.
  • Apply gesso or white acrylic paint that has been watered down slightly to areas of the page spread that are darker than you would like.
  • Add rubber-stamped images, and then color them in using glitter gel pens.

That is all there is to completing this mixed-media art journal prompt. Continue working on as many page spreads as needed to completely express what it is you are excited about. Share this project, or complete these project with family and friends. Encourage them to create mixed-media art about what they are excited about.
