Starting a recipe journal is a creative and fun way to go about mixed media art journaling if the inspiration is lacking. And it can be therapeutic as well!
Mixed media art journaling is a new an very popular way to motivate creativity. Watching artists like Suzi Blu and Ansota creating their unique art journals online, inspires other artists to think outside of the box. Recipe journaling is a concept for people who lack inspiration and do not know what to journal about. Remember, art journaling is mostly about visual images but if the artist lacks the inspiration to convey emotion through visual images, then words are the next best thing. Take a feeling or emotion and write about it, using mixed media as the background. Choose one specific problem by creating a "recipe" as the solution. Use gesso, podge, glue, scrap book decorations, paint and ink to create your recipe journal page. Remember to paste two or more pages together if the paper is too thin. Any books can be used - from old story books to new journals. Layer materials on top of each other until the desired effect is achieved. No planning is needed - just go with the flow. Mixed media art journaling isn’t expensive. No need to buy everything brand new. Use old scraps of paper and make decorations using fabric, ribbon, plastic and carton. Make craft glue by thinning wood glue with water. Dried flowers petals, or even potpourri can be used to give your pages a sweet scent. Remember to wash paint brushes properly after using, especially the soft podge brush. Otherwise the brush will harden and be useless afterwards. All of these materials are available at The Crafter's Inn in the Helderberg Village Walk, Somerset West.
