Art Journal to Plan Your Day

Use an Art Project to Organize Your Day and Simplify Your Schedule

Does your schedule overwhelm you? Would you rather tear up your calendar than follow what is written out each day? Let's work on an art journal prompt!

For those with overwhelming schedules, it is no secret that tossing calendars aside is a desire. Rather than throwing out the calendar, we are going to make some art-inspired day schedules. The focus of this art journal prompt is writing out schedules, mixing them up, and turning them into a mixed-media art project!

For this art journal prompt, you will need the following materials:

  1. Art journal
  2. Waxed paper (two pieces, each slightly larger than the pages in your art journal)
  3. Printed out calendar pages, or pull out calendar pages no longer needed from a daily planner or wall calendar.
  4. Heavy-duty glue stick (found in the scrapbook section of most craft stores)
  5. Ballpoint pens: red, blue, black
  6. Highlighter: yellow
  7. Black fine point sharpie
  8. Watercolor paint: assorted colors
  9. Paintbrushes
  10. Small containers of water
  11. Post-it notes: yellow
  12. Memo book pages (similar in size to an assignment notebook)
  13. Rubber stamps (office themed and themes related to what is on your schedule)
  14. Black and brown stamp pads
  15. Markers (assorted colors)

Follow these steps to complete this art journal prompt:

  1. Open your art journal to the first blank page spread. Because you will be working with wet media, place a piece of waxed paper behind each page.
  2. Using the heavy-duty glue stick, affix the calendar pages on to each of the pages in the spread of your art journal.
  3. Fill in as much of your schedule as you can fit on to the calendar pages using the ballpoint pen. Use the highlighter to put emphasis on really important days and really important tasks.
  4. Use the black sharpie to outline date blocks, circle important tasks, and put a X over other listed items or days.
  5. Do a watercolor wash in one or more colors over the entire surface of both sides of the page spread in your art journal. Blot the color, create strips of color, or create mottled look with the paint. Try not to use too much water to prevent page curling. Use a heat gun or a hair dryer to speed drying time.
  6. Using the heavy-duty glue stick, affix the post-it notes and memo book pages. Use the ballpoint pen to write out to-do lists, phone messages, important reminders, and shopping lists.
  7. Layer rubber stamped images over the post-it notes, memo book pages, and calendar pages. Color in the images using markers in assorted colors and patterns.

Continue layering notes and rubber stamped images until you feel this art journal page spread is complete and to your liking. Repeat this art journal prompt on as many page spreads in your art journal necessary to completely art up your schedule.

Note: If you would rather not use actual calendar pages in your art journal because you cannot find pages that are not glossy, draw a calendar grid on your art journal page spread using sharpies.
