Spring is in the air! Birds are chirping, flowers are blooming, and trees are budding. Let's bring some of the spring season into our art journal pages.
It is time for a shift. Previous art journal prompts have focused on issues with emotions, schedules, and feelings. This time, the focus is going to be on the season. This focus can incorporate how your emotions are, how schedules change, and how feelings are impacted by the coming of a new season. Or this focus can be on the season, itself. The freedom is yours because, after all, it is your art journal.
You will need the following materials to complete this mixed media art journal prompt:
- Art journal
- Spring-themed scrapbook embellishments
- Spring-themed rubber stamps
- Floral decorative papers
- Pastel and jewel-toned acrylic paint
- Paintbrushes
- Small containers of water
- Scissors (straight edges, and decorative edges)
- Decoupage medium
- Sponge brushes
- Glitter gel pens, assorted colors
Follow these instructions to complete this mixed media art journal prompt:
- Open your art journal to the first page spread and create a light color wash with the acrylic paint. Choose a light blue, purple, green, or pink. Allow to dry completely. You can speed up the drying process through use of a heat gun or a hair dryer.
- While the page spread is drying, cut out different shapes in the decorative paper (circles, ovals, squares, rectangles, etc.) so they are large enough for journaling and small enough not to congest the page spread. Use either straight edged or decorative edged scissors depending on the look you are going for. When the paint has dried, affix these shapes the page with decoupage medium.
- Layer over some more swirls of paint in both pastel and jewel tones. Light sweeps and swirls will give the page spread interesting movement and color composition. Allow this to dry completely, as well, before moving on to the next step.
- Embellish the entire page spread with the spring themed scrapbook embellishments. Layer over the decorative shapes, layer over the paint, and create swirling boarders. Be sure to attach everything firmly to the pages so, when turned, items do not loosen and fall off.
- Using the glitter gel pens, write your thoughts about spring on the decorative paper. This can be anything from quotations, song lyrics, where you plan to plant your gardens, who is having a birthday, and so on. Try using a different color for each thought. If possible, try using interesting and decorative text.
- Create additional swirls using the glitter gel pen around the entire page spread. Create vines, climbing flowers, and butterfly drawings.
This is an excellent project to work on with children, or with a group of friends. Add some spring-themed desserts and you will have a mixed media art journal party! Not only will you be celebrating the beginning of a new season, but you will be bidding a fond farewell to winter!
