Art Journal About Food

Do You Have a Love-Hate Relationship With Food? Make Art About It!

© Jennifer Hollowell

There is no getting around how important food is to everyone - be it to sustain us, entertain us, comfort us, or betray us. That is this art journal prompt's focus.

Many people love food, and many people hate food. There is that who love to be in the kitchen experimenting with new recipes, while there are others who think ordering out is the way to go. Because we live in a free society, everyone can find their own way around the kitchen... or avoid it all together. There is no right or wrong! The focus of this art journal prompt is your relationship with food.

Note: It will be necessary to schedule an artist's date prior to working on this mixed media art journal prompt in order to gather materials. Be sure to schedule in two separate times – one for gathering materials, and another for completing this art journal prompt. That way, you will not feel rushed through either process.

For this mixed-media art journal prompt, you will need the following materials:

  • Freebie recipe cards found in grocery stores
  • Sales flyers found in grocery stores (or your mailbox)
  • Coupons you do not intend to use
  • Food-related magazines (some are free in grocery stores when purchasing a certain dollar value, so keep your eyes open)
  • Menus from local restaurants
  • Napkins or other paper items from local restaurants
  • Scissors
  • Heavy-duty glue stick

Follow these simple instructions for completing this mixed-media art journal prompt:

  1. Open your art journal to the first blank page spread, and then surround yourself with all the materials you gathered during your artist date.
  2. The first layer you are going to create is with the recipe cards gathered from the grocery store. Create a collage on both sides of the page spread affixing them with the heavy-duty glue stick. It may be necessary to use more than one page spread depending on how many recipe cards you gathered.
  3. When finished, go through all the sales flyers and magazines cutting out everything you find interesting. This can be everything from additional recipes, to coupons, to articles, to photography, and so on.
  4. Collage over the recipe cards with what you found in the magazines and sales flyers. Do not worry if you can no longer tell what the recipe card is about. It is merely there for a backdrop. Again, depending on how much you find, it may be necessary to expand this beyond just one page spread.
  5. Add the elements from the restaurants, as well as the coupons to finish off the page spread.

You may wish to add text to these page spreads about why you made the selections that you did, or about your relationship with food. You may wish to collage over the entire page of each spread, or leave some of the areas blank for this text. It is interesting, however, to write directly on the collage work using a black sharpie.
