How people perceive things varies a lot. The focus of this art journal is your perception of one or more things. How do you perceive things?
Perceptions can be a very tricky thing, particularly when controversy is involved or you are in the middle of a debate. You may perceive things one way, while someone else may be approaching the issue from a completely different angle. How do you perceive things? Choose one or more topics, and incorporate them into your art journal.
For this mixed-media art journal prompt, you will need the following materials:
- Art journal, dark jewel tones
- Waxed paper
- Acrylic paint
- Paintbrushes
- Small containers of water
- Pictures depicting topic of perception
- Post-it notes (or similar sized note paper)
- Decoupage or gel medium
- Black sharpies
Follow these simple instructions for completing this mixed-media art journal prompt:
- Open your art journal to the first blank page spread and place a piece of waxed paper beneath each page to protect the rest of your book.
- Add thick layers of acrylic paint in a random, swirling pattern. Mix colors and blob them all together.
- Place the photography directly into the wet paint (add a layer of decoupage or gel medium to the back first to ensure a strong hold), anywhere on the page you desire.
- Repeat this process with the post-it notes (or similar sized note paper). Consider layering the paper over the photography slightly.
- Allow the paint to dry completely. Speed drying time through use of a heat gun or hair dryer. Depending on how much paint was used, the page spread may need to sit out over night in order to dry completely.
- Write out your perceptions of the photography selected for this mixed media art journal prompt on the notepapers using the black sharpies. Do not censor yourself; just let the thoughts flow freely. Do not worry about how messy or neat your handwriting is.
Ideas for further alterations:
- Add pieces of ephemera further depicting the perception being conveyed.
- Layer some additional paint on to the photography, as well as the notepapers.
- Find magazine and newspaper clippings about the topic you are expressing your perceptions about.
- Write an illustrated unsent letter expressing your thoughts about this perception, and enclose it in an envelope to incorporate into the page spread.
- Create tag art to incorporate into the page spread.
- Use rubber stamped images depicting this perception, or stamp using alph-letters to create bold statements.
- Add buttons, gems, charms, beads, and jewels to give the page some sparkle, pop, and movement.
Repeat this art journal prompt on as many page spread as necessary to completely convey your definition, depiction, and thoughts about perceptions. If your perceptions are constantly being challenged or are constantly the opposite of others, consider creating some page spreads about that as well.
